Poets Reading on Hiroshima and Disarmament (Encore)

August 9, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Shadow of a human on stairs. Hiroshima, August 6, 1945

A special episode of St. Rocco’s Broadcast for Hiroshima 75,  featuring new submissions from past readers at St. Rocco’s reading series. The first half of the show focuses on the day itself: historian Chel Miller reads the poems “August 6” by Sankichi Toge and “Let Us Be Midwives” by Sadako Kurihara; poet/performer Nicole Peyrafitte reads “Anonymous Landscape” by Yuko Otomo; Sam Truitt reads his poem “53 Seconds”, marking the time it took for the bomb to fall from Enola Gay to Ground Zero; and David Abel reads “Pika-Don”, a catalog essay about shadow photograms that were created by the atomic flash at Hiroshima and the International Shadows Project. The 2nd half of the program is about disarmament more widely considered: poet Michael Ruby reads “American Overseas Bases”, Mitch Manning reads “Mutual Forgiveness”, and Kristin Prevallet and Yamuna Sangarisivan read their collaborative text “Disarmament.”
Background music for this episode includes “Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima for 52 string” by Krzystof Penderecki and “Breathing” by Kate Bush.
